The purchase of the stake took place through a public tender called by the bankruptcy trustee of the company Daneco Impianti SpA which previously held the stake involved in the transaction. Sistema Ambiente manages the waste collection and urban service in the municipality of Lucca, which is part of the Toscana Costa Optimal Territorial Area, which includes the provinces of Lucca, Massa Carrara, Pisa and, in part, Livorno. The company serves about 90,000 inhabitants and collects 58,000 tons of waste per year, with a sorted collection percentage of 81%, the highest value among all the provincial capitals of the Tuscany Region (2021 data).
The maintenance of the presence of a private shareholder in Sistema Ambiente allows the continuation of the existing concession until the expiry of 2029.
The operation consolidates the presence of the Iren Group in Tuscany, where the company is already engaged, through direct and indirect investments, in the sectors of waste, water purification and distribution, gas network management and the sale of services. After the municipalities of Arezzo, Grosseto and Siena, part of the 104 municipalities of the ATO Toscana Sud and the municipality of Livorno, served by the Iren Group, we therefore add the municipality of Lucca, the provincial capital which in Tuscany has the best performance on separate waste collection.
“This operation - declares the Chairman of Iren Luca Dal Fabbro - contributes to further increasing the Group's operations in Tuscany, one of the Italian regions where Iren's presence is most significant both in terms of services provided and industrial activities launched. Also in Lucca, as in all the Italian cities in which Iren operates, we will work in synergy and harmony with local authorities and territorial stakeholders with the aim of making a significant contribution to the development and growth of the local community". "Iren's entry into an area and a city where attention to the environment and sustainability have always been priority objectives - says the Deputy Chairman of Iren Moris Ferretti - will make it possible to immediately start actions aimed at achieving important service targets, in order to strengthen and improve environmental performance and at the same time generate positive local economic effects".
